Space We Created is a 7-minute work that explores timbral possibilities on the vibraphone using snare drumsticks while the vibraphone is ringing perpetually. The player will play on the bars normally, use dead strokes, hit the edge of the bar with the shaft and perform buzz rolls on the bars. The 14 bar ending is played with heavy yarn mallets to give a sense of finality and resolution on a timbral level, as well as ending on C major chord for harmonic resolution.
This work is heavily inspired by modern composers like Andy Akiho and Robert Honstein, who have pioneered new techniques and sound possibilities on the instrument. The title pays homage to those composers and others who have not only carved out space and repertoire for the vibraphone, but for percussion and the ever-expanding possibilities of timbral expression.
