33 Facets is a set of thirty three segments (facets), 31 one of which can played by the performers in any order they choose. With the "aleatoric" performance technique the performers are responsible for organizing their 'score' and therefore which 'Facets' will be played in sequence. With the exception of the first and last 'Facets' all the others are decided before the actual performance, with each performer selecting 12 of the 31 remaining 'Facets' . The actual music is completely scored out and is written in such a way that there will always be a connection and "logic" to the piece regardless of what arrangement is presented. In addition there is a 'Tape' part as well which acts as an acoustic "glue" that provides an ambient base for the instruments. As could be expected no performance would ever be the same and the composer encourages this. -R.D.W
