This piece is a re-elaboration of Isabella Leonard’s motet O Domine, ecce peccatrix anima, from her collection of 12 Motetti a vocce sola, Op. 6. This re-elaboration, far from being just a transcription, is a musical commentary to the original motet: the two string instruments create their deformed realization of the figured bass, in a sort of “corrupted” harmonization reminiscing a modal/tonal framework; the vibraphone is charged with bearing the original vocal line, likewise distorted and fragmented. The piece was conceived during 2020, which marked the 400th anniversary of Isabella Leonarda’s birth.
