Twenty-Four is a percussion quintet written by Tyler Tolles as an homage to all of the fallen service members of the U.S. Armed Forces. The inspiration and source material for this work is from “Taps” - a military bugle call sounded during a military funeral, which honors the deceased and their service to the United States. The call is comprised of twenty-four notes and organized into eight sets of three-note phrases. The primary rhythmic motor underpinning the work is based around six-tuplets in 4/4 time, of which there are twenty-four. The number also frequently appears in the subtle dynamic phrases as well as the macro and micro-rhythmic architecture of the work.
